Each Local Action Group (LAG) brings together local stakeholders who work together on the local development strategy they have defined, through innovative projects aimed at developing their territory. They support project promoters, both private and public, throughout the entire process.

A Local Action Group (LAG) brings together a set of public and private socio-economic partners established within a given rural area.

In France, a financial allocation from the European LEADER funds is entrusted to the LAGs by their Delegated Managing Authority to co-finance local public or private projects that implement a strategy fostering the development of rural areas. The LAG is responsible for managing these funds and supporting project promoters.

In France, the diversity of rural territories makes it essential to adapt to local needs, which can vary from one region to another. This is why each LAG defines its own strategy, tailored to the specific characteristics of its territory.

A LAG relies on an existing legal structure such as inter-municipal communities, PETR (pôles d’équilibre territorial et rural), associations, joint unions, etc.

Each LAG provides a dedicated contact person responsible for facilitation, guidance, and assistance throughout the project process.

In France

For the 2023–2027 programming period, 308 Local Action Groups (LAGs) are engaged in the LEADER approach, covering more than 28,000 municipalities and 29 million inhabitants.

Leader France works with French LAGs to identify their needs and the challenges of the current programming period. The association represents the interests of key stakeholders involved in the LEADER approach.

By establishing partnerships with various bodies, Leader France creates synergies across all mechanisms dedicated to rural development.
